How to beat the Blue Monday Blues!

The 18th January is Blue Monday, and it’s supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. But there are ways you can beat it! Plan ahead and don’t let Blue Monday get you down!

Blue Monday happens in the third week of January, and is calculated by an algorithm that takes into account typical weather patterns, the time since Christmas and before your January paycheque, plus the time it takes for your news years resolutions to fail or backfire.

Blue Monday is the day all of these realities typically combine. Add to that the legacy of 2020, national lockdowns, and the ongoing international fight against COVID-19, and Blue Monday 2021 is looking bluer than usual.

What can you do?

Don’t let Blue Monday creep up on you! Simple actions can make a big difference here, so you don’t have to worry.

Plan something. Get together with friends on video chat; treat yourself to some pampering; listen to uplifting music and steer clear of the moody vibes.

If you can get out of your home safely, try getting some fresh air on Sunday 17th. Facing the week fresh is key, and if you add an early night to that, you’re in a strong place.

Games can help

We’re a game studio, and we’re all about bringing people together through shared gaming experiences. You probably have memories of ruthlessly bankrupting your family members while playing MONOPOLY around the table. We certainly do! So why not recreate that?

Video chat has done so much to bridge the distance, and digital board games are making new memories all over the world.

Our board games can help distract from the Monday blues without flaunting lockdown rules. So why not invite your friends to play a round of MONOPOLY, THE GAME OF LIFE 2, or CLUEDO? You can also play against our AI opponents, or alongside other players around the world if you’re feeling extra social.

Looking after you

Your mental health is important and this year we need to be aware of how we’re feeling. It’s not just about Blue Monday, if you’re feeling down, you’re not alone.

Think of things that boost your mood and make them part of your routine. For example, you could start a weekly game night with friends, or listen to a favourite happy song after work every day.

Little changes can be set up as a recurring event in your calendar. These are often far easier to stick to than the big life-changing new years resolutions you may have set yourself. They can also have just as big an impact on your life.

Blue Monday doesn’t need to be so blue! Make plans now and you could find yourself brightening every Monday for the rest of the year.
