The Making of Paris, La Belle Epoque
Bringing you beautiful new themes to refresh your board game experience, is one of our great joys. The themes we create for our games give us a unique opportunity to match the feel of the game to various seasonal moments, and Paris, La Belle Epoque has that summer feeling down.
Our Creative Director, Mike Rosser, was able to share some insight into the process:
“The themes in the Season Pass are our chance to transport you to a wide variety of different cities and worlds. After creating the best, most faithful digital adaptation of the original, we turned our attention to all the additional places we could take you.
The whole team got together and we filled a whiteboard with amazing ideas, but we always found ourselves circling back to Paris! It’s an iconic city, filled with amazing landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and Notre Dame. It also has a unique feel that gives the game a whole new atmosphere!”

About La Belle Epoque
Paris is a famously beautiful city, known as The City of Lights, and it was during La Belle Epoque that it earned that name! La Belle Epoque means The Beautiful Time. It was an era of peace and prosperity between 1871 and 1914. Technology progressed and the arts practically exploded!
This was when Gustave Eiffel built his tower, which was supposed to stand for a few months, but ended up becoming an iconic landmark!
Mike Rosser said:
“The more we researched, the more we realised that we had to set our Paris theme during La Belle Epoque! It was a golden age of optimism and we wanted to channel this exuberance. We really can’t wait for you to experience the magic and energy of this breezy summertime board.”

About the pieces
Every Marmalade Game Studio theme comes with its own customised pieces, specially designed to complete the experience. For MONOPOLY Paris, La Belle Epoque, the selection was clear:
The Carriage
Horse and carriage was the primary transport of the time, although the first metro line opened with the 1900 World Fair, signalling a new era for transport!
The Cockerel
The cockerel is a French symbol, due to the Latin word Gallus meaning both rooster and “inhabitant of Gaul”, which was the Roman word for the region that covered France!
The Eiffel Tower
The tower on the Champ de Mars was named after Gustave Eiffel, whose engineering company designed and built it as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. For 41 years it was the tallest building in the world!
The Perfume Bottle
France is still known as the perfume and cosmetic centre of Europe, and the atomiser nozzle was invented during La Belle Epoque, revolutionising how perfume was distributed forevermore!
